This series of paintings was inspired by the patterns raindrops make on glass, in particular car windscreens and how they blur and distort the background.
I live in Bolton in the UK and we have A LOT of rain. During one of these rainy days, while stuck in traffic, I was watching the pattern of the rain of my windscreen and thinking how pretty it was. I took a quick photo, making sure to focus on the rain rather than the scene in front of me and it was only when looking at it later that I noticed how the rain drops reflected the colours around them.
I have since spent far too many hours parked in laybys and at roadsides in the rain, with my windscreen wipers off, taking photographs of various scenes of passing cars. I do enjoy the look of lights reflected in rain so car headlights are always a winner if I can catch them at the right angle. Surprisingly I've not yet been arrested as a weirdo but it's only a matter of time.
I am hoping to do more of these with different backgrounds; in fact I have just recently taken some photographs of a local historic building that I was happily passing during a unusually heavy downpour and it seemed too good an opportunity to miss.
Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed painting them!
